2027: Uzodimma Enters Imo West Senate Race

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has formally declared his intention to contest the Imo West senatorial seat under the All Progressives Congress (APC), setting the stage for a high-profile internal party contest.

Uzodimma announced his decision on Sunday, May 10, through his verified social media accounts, confirming his entry into the race ahead of the party’s primaries.

He joins a list of prominent contenders for the ticket, including former Governor Rochas Okorocha and the incumbent Senator representing the zone, Osita Izunaso.

Party leaders from the senatorial district had earlier indicated support for Uzodimma, having reportedly purchased his nomination form two weeks ago and describing him as their consensus candidate.

In his statement, the governor said his decision was in response to appeals from constituents in Imo West, adding that his ambition is driven by the need to build on the policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“My dear people of Imo West Senatorial District have once again called upon me to serve, and I have accepted this noble call with utmost humility, sincerity of purpose, and unwavering commitment to the collective advancement of our people,” Uzodimma said.

He also confirmed that he had submitted himself for screening by the APC leadership and the party’s National Assembly primary committee.

“In furtherance of this responsibility, I presented myself before the leadership of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the screening committee for the National Assembly primary election,” he said.

Uzodimma stressed that the senatorial seat was not a personal entitlement but part of the party’s broader structure and objectives.

“During the engagement, I reaffirmed that the senatorial seat I seek to occupy belongs first and foremost to our great party, while I remain only a loyal and dedicated candidate entrusted with the responsibility of projecting and advancing the ideals, vision, and aspirations of the APC to the very best of my ability,” he stated.

He further noted that his political ambition was tied to sustaining what he described as the achievements of the current federal administration.

“My aspiration to represent the good people of Imo West Senatorial District at the Red Chamber is inspired by the desire to consolidate on the gains of the #RenewedHope administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, through quality representation, effective legislation, enhanced development, and sustainable progress for our people and our nation,” he added.

The race for the APC ticket in Imo West is expected to intensify as key political figures within the state continue to position themselves ahead of the primaries.
