Anambra Doctor Freed After Gunmen Abduction, Strike Averted

The Medical Director of Crown Multi-Specialist Hospital, Nkpor in Anambra State, Dr Edwin Emegakor, abducted on Thursday, May 7, 2026, has been released after days in captivity.

His release was confirmed on Sunday, May 10, 2026, in Awka by the Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Anambra State Branch, Dr Princeton Okam, who said the rescue followed a police-led operation.

Dr Emegakor was kidnapped in the evening of May 7, 2026, shortly after attending to patients at his hospital.

Armed men, suspected to be dressed in security-style uniforms, reportedly stormed the facility, overpowered staff on duty, and whisked him away at gunpoint. Mobile phones belonging to workers were also seized during the operation.

The incident triggered an emergency meeting of the NMA, which on Saturday, May 9, issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Anambra State Government and security agencies to secure his release or face an indefinite strike from Monday, May 12, 2026.

However, Dr Okam said the planned industrial action has now been suspended following the doctor’s release.

He confirmed that Dr Emegakor is in stable condition and has reunited with his family, adding that an emergency meeting will be held to formally decide on the withdrawal of the strike threat.

He did not disclose whether any ransom was paid but commended security operatives for their role in securing the doctor’s freedom.

The NMA also urged the Anambra State Government to strengthen security around health facilities, warning that repeated attacks on medical personnel pose a growing threat to healthcare delivery in the state.
