The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Turaki, has disclosed that the party has not received any official notification from Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke concerning his reported resignation.
Governor Adeleke had publicly announced on Tuesday, the 2nd of December, 2025, his decision to withdraw from the party, citing the ongoing internal crisis within the PDP as his reason for departure.
Speaking to reporters following the National Working Committee (NWC) meeting in Abuja, Turaki recognized Governor Adeleke’s constitutional right to either stay or leave the party. However, he noted that the PDP’s leadership was only made aware of the resignation through media reports and had received no official letter from the Governor himself.
Turaki stated: “We have seen online a letter said to be from him resigning from our party, but I tell you that we have not, up to this moment, received any formal indication that he has left.”
The factional chairman highlighted the complexity of the situation by pointing out that Governor Adeleke’s name is still listed among the aspirants vying for the Osun governorship ticket. He explained that the party would rely on reports from officials overseeing the primary to definitively ascertain whether the governor has formally withdrawn or is still participating in the contest.
Reiterating the freedom of association, Turaki added: “As far as we are concerned even if the letter circulating online is genuine, Gov. Adeleke, like any Nigerian, has the freedom to associate as he wishes.”
Turaki asserted that the fundamental strength of the PDP rests with its grassroots supporters rather than with elected officials who choose to defect. He argued that the departure of governors in some states has not substantially weakened the party’s grassroots backing.

He expressed confidence in the party’s durability: “Our people have remained with us, and by God’s grace, when elections come, they will show that the PDP is still solid.”
In other matters, the Chairman confirmed that the NWC reviewed and approved the congresses conducted in Osun for the election of ad hoc delegates. He also reported that preparations for the local government elections in Anambra were assessed, with the party projecting a strong showing.
Regarding former PDP governors nominated by President Bola Tinubu for non-career ambassadorial roles, Turaki indicated that they have yet to formally inform the party. “If they approach us, we will consider their communication on its merit,” he confirmed.
Finally, addressing the country’s worsening security challenges, Turaki called for an urgent reassessment of Nigeria’s security framework by the Federal Government. He criticized the current structure, stating that it is unreasonable to designate governors as chief security officers when they have no real control over security operations in their states. He concluded: “We call on the federal government to brace up and begin a comprehensive review of the security framework in this country.”
