A High Court in Uyo on Saturday, December 6, 2025 awarded damages to a masquerade who was arrested while performing a traditional worship rite, ruling that the state violated his constitutional rights.
The case followed an executive order issued on Wednesday, December 3, 2025 directing security agencies to arrest any masquerade seen performing on public streets.
Acting on that directive, the masquerade was detained and later charged with disturbing public peace.
In its judgment, the court held that the arrest, detention and prosecution were unlawful, stressing that personal liberty and freedom of religion are protected under the constitution.

The court ordered his immediate release and directed the state government to pay compensation for the violation.
Legal analysts say the ruling underscores judicial protection for cultural and traditional practices, marking an important precedent for similar cases in the state.
