Prominent political figure and former presidential candidate, Gbenga Hashim, has declared his resilience against any political or legal pressure intended to undermine the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a statement released this Wednesday, the 17th of December, 2025, Hashim maintained that the foundation of Nigeria’s multiparty democracy is too deep-seated to be uprooted. He dismissed recent political maneuvers which he claims are orchestrated by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as futile attempts to monopolize the nation’s political landscape.
Hashim argued that diversity has always been the cornerstone of the Nigerian state. He pointed out that the country’s founders intentionally chose a multiparty framework at the dawn of independence to reflect the nation’s complex social fabric.
To support his stance, he offered a historical perspective: “Nigeria has always been committed to multiparty democracy. Even in the First Republic, political power was never concentrated in the hands of one man or one party,” he said.

The PDP chieftain highlighted that even during an era dominated by giants like Sir Ahmadu Bello and the Northern People’s Congress, the political arena remained competitive. He noted the significant influence of various movements, including:Aminu Kano’s Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU), J.S. Tarka’s Middle Belt Congress, and Sir Kashim Ibrahim’s Borno People’s Union
He further observed that the South West mirrored this variety, with the Action Group, the NCNC, and local groups like the Ibadan People’s Party all vying for relevance.
In a poetic conclusion to his message, Hashim reaffirmed that no single entity can dominate the Nigerian spirit: “Our democracy has never been a democracy of one star flying in its firmament. In our sky there are thousands of stars,” he added.
