A fresh criminal legal action has been initiated in Kaduna State as prominent cleric Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Abubakar Gumi seeks redress against two social media users. The suit, formally lodged on the 24th of December, 2025, centers on allegations of online defamation and the fabrication of life-threatening statements.
The matter, registered under suit number KMD/685/25 at the Kaduna State Chief Magistrate Court, targets George Udom and Bello Isiaka. Dr. Gumi contends that the duo utilized Facebook to circulate a narrative that falsely links him to violent incitement, a move he claims has put his personal safety at risk.
The core of the dispute involves a post shared on December 23, 2025. The defendants are accused of falsely attributing a specific threat to the Sheikh directed at General Christopher Musa, the Minister of Defence.
The social media content at the heart of the case alleged that Sheikh Gumi issued a warning regarding military actions against banditry. Specifically: The post allegedly claimed that the minister’s family in Zangon Kataf, Southern Kaduna, would be attacked if military offensives were not halted.
Represented by Suleiman Danlami Lere, Esq., Sheikh Gumi has categorically distanced himself from the remarks. His legal team argues that the defendants misappropriated the cleric’s image and name to lend a “veneer of authenticity” to a dangerous falsehood.
The Sheikh characterized the posts as “wicked” and argued they were calculated to brand him as a “sponsor of terrorism and a threat to national security.” He further clarified his position to the court:

The defendants used his likeness to validate a fake threat, the posts expose him to potential backlash from both the public and state security forces.
As an advocate for dialogue, he maintains the posts contradict his life’s work.
The prosecution is seeking to apply the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State, 2017. If the court finds the evidence sufficient, the defendants may face criminal penalties for their role in the publication.
