A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Comrade Austin Okai, has warned that the deepening political rift between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, could eventually engulf the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Reports indicate that tensions between Wike and Fubara have resurfaced in recent days, following the minister’s public declaration of his resolve to frustrate the governor’s re-election ambition. Although Fubara is now aligned with the ruling party, he is said to enjoy the support of some influential APC leaders.
However, the situation took a sharper turn when Wike cautioned a prominent party stalwart to stay out of Rivers State politics. The remark reportedly sparked a heated exchange between the FCT minister and the national leadership of the APC, further widening cracks within the party.
Speaking during an interview on TVC News on Tuesday, the 6th of January, 2026, Okai predicted that the Rivers crisis would not remain isolated but would spread to other parts of the country if left unchecked.
He said, “Wike did not just attack the APC National Secretary, he attacked the NSA and all of them. For over a decade, the crisis of ruling parties usually starts from Rivers State.

“What you see happening in Rivers will consume APC except the president summons a political courage and call the FCT Minister to order. He has declared that his political survival depends on Rivers State and we don’t know the agreement between him and the president.
“Wike is talking tough even more than the APC National Chairman, NSA and the Chief of Staff to the President. Wike is talking more than the president himself”.
Okai’s comments reflect growing concerns within political circles that the ongoing power struggle in Rivers State could pose a serious test to the internal cohesion of the ruling party if urgent steps are not taken to manage the fallout.
