Rivers Approves 5,000 New Civil Service Jobs

The Rivers State Government has approved the recruitment of 5,000 new workers into the state civil service as part of efforts to strengthen public sector manpower.

The approval was granted at a State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Dr Honour Sirawo, said the latest recruitment would expand the workforce across government institutions.

She disclosed that the approval brings the total number of workers employed in the education sector under the current administration to 9,500.

Also addressing the media, the Commissioner for Employment Generation and Economic Empowerment, Dr Chisom Gbali, assured residents that the recruitment exercise would be conducted transparently.

She stated that the process would be merit-based and free from favouritism, adding that due process would be strictly followed throughout the exercise.

The government said the recruitment forms part of broader measures to tackle unemployment and improve efficiency in public service delivery across the state.
