A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Iyabo Obasanjo, has outlined her development agenda as she seeks support for her ambition to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, formally declared her interest in the race on Monday while addressing journalists at the APC national headquarters in Abuja.
She said her aspiration is anchored on a vision of inclusive growth, economic expansion, and sustainable development for the state.
“I am sure not only will we succeed in getting the nomination, but we’ll also succeed in governing Ogun State in a way that will make APC even greater in that state and in the nation,” she said.
The former senator identified infrastructure development, women empowerment, agriculture, transportation, and education as key priorities of her proposed administration.
She placed particular emphasis on improving education in science, technology and information communication technology, noting that equipping young people with modern skills would strengthen the state’s economic future.
Obasanjo also highlighted the persistent traffic congestion affecting travellers moving from Lagos through Ogun State to other parts of the country.
“Ogun State faces road congestion for travellers leaving Lagos to go east or north. Discongesting these roads will improve citizens’ lives,” she said.
While acknowledging ongoing federal road projects, she stressed that improving transport connectivity would have direct benefits for residents and businesses.
On agriculture, the APC chieftain described Ogun as strategically positioned as a major food supplier to Lagos and an important manufacturing hub.

She said her administration would prioritise policies aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector and expanding opportunities for young people.
Addressing the issue of zoning in the state’s politics, Obasanjo called for unity across the three senatorial districts.
She noted that one zone has yet to produce a governor since the Second Republic.
“I believe every zone should have the opportunity to produce a governor. A candidate must win across all zones, not just one. I have the capacity to do that,” she said.
Obasanjo also spoke on the significance of female representation in leadership, observing that Ogun State has never elected a woman as governor.
“A woman has never been governor, and inspiring women voters is crucial,” she said.
She urged women and young people to take advantage of what she described as an important moment for broader political participation.
Drawing on her past experience as a senator and Commissioner for Health in Ogun State, she expressed confidence in her ability to mobilise grassroots support.
“If you know my efforts when I was Commissioner for Health, we did a lot of good things, and the goodwill from my time in the Senate and as Commissioner is what is making it so easy to mobilise for APC and to mobilise for my candidature,” she said.
With the 2027 governorship election still some distance away, Obasanjo’s declaration signals the early positioning of aspirants within the APC as political consultations gather momentum across Ogun State.
