Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the consolidation of the Ministry of Higher Education with the Ministry of Education as part of steps to strengthen coordination and push forward reforms within the state’s education sector.
The governor’s spokesman, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Sunday, the 15th of March, 2026, disclosed that the restructured ministry will now house a Directorate of Higher Education responsible for supervising universities and other tertiary institutions in the state.
Dawakin Tofa explained that the directorate will operate under the leadership of a Permanent Secretary, alongside supporting personnel tasked with ensuring the smooth administration of higher education activities.
“All agencies under the former Higher Education Ministry, like the Scholarship Board, will now report to the Ministry of Education,” the statement said.

Governor Yusuf noted that the decision is aimed at reducing government spending, improving administrative efficiency, and strengthening oversight across the various tiers of the education system in Kano.
He stated that the restructuring forms part of broader efforts by his administration to reposition the education sector and create better prospects for the state’s younger population.
The governor also instructed the Office of the Secretary to the State Government and the Head of Service to oversee and facilitate an immediate and seamless transition to the new arrangement.
