A presidential aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has intensified consultations within the party following a high-level meeting with Seyi Makinde, as efforts to resolve internal divisions gather momentum.
According to a statement released by his media office on Thursday, the closed-door meeting held in Abuja focused on strengthening unity among key stakeholders within the opposition party.
Olawepo-Hashim described the engagement as “productive and forward-looking,” noting that discussions extended beyond routine consultations to address broader strategic concerns.
He emphasised that internal cohesion, clear leadership direction, and consolidation of influence across regions remain critical to repositioning the PDP.
Commending Governor Makinde’s role, the aspirant described him as a consistent advocate of democratic values and institutional strengthening within the party.

“At a time when Nigeria requires stability, inclusiveness, and institutional strength, party unity cannot be compromised,” Olawepo-Hashim said, expressing optimism that sustained dialogue would help rebuild trust and restore confidence among party members.
The PDP has been grappling with a prolonged internal crisis since its November 2025 National Convention in Ibadan, which produced a new National Working Committee but also deepened divisions.
The situation worsened following leadership disputes, the emergence of rival factions, and a Court of Appeal ruling that nullified the convention.
Ongoing reconciliation efforts, led by the party’s Board of Trustees, aim to bridge differences and stabilise the party ahead of future electoral contests.
