ADC Convention Ousts Nafiu Bala, Lawmaker Abejide, Others Over Anti-Party Claims

A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by former Senate President David Mark has expelled its rival factional chairman, Nafiu Bala, alongside several party members over alleged anti-party activities, further deepening the party’s internal crisis.

The decision was reached on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at the party’s national convention in Abuja, where delegates adopted the expulsions through a voice vote.

Those expelled include Leke Abejide, a member of the House of Representatives, Kingsley Temitope, Noman Obinna, Kennedy Odion and Stella Chukwuma.

The motion for their expulsion was moved by Senator Binos Yaroe, who represents Adamawa South, and was approved by delegates at the gathering.

Speaking at the convention, the party’s National Organizing Secretary, Chinedu Idigo, accused the affected members of fueling internal divisions and destabilizing the party’s structure.

He said their conduct created confusion within the party and among the public and regulatory authorities, adding that they were given opportunities to make amends but failed to do so.

The development comes amid a prolonged leadership dispute within the ADC that began in July 2025 following the emergence of a rival leadership backed by an opposition coalition.

The crisis has largely centred on competing claims to the party’s leadership, with Bala insisting that the Mark-led structure lacks legal validity.

On April 1, 2026, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) withdrew recognition of the Mark-led faction following a court directive to maintain the status quo pending resolution of the dispute.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear an appeal on April 22, 2026, filed by the Mark faction challenging Bala’s claims to the party’s leadership, in a case expected to determine the party’s authentic leadership.
