The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the alleged extrajudicial killing of a suspect by a police officer in Delta State, describing the act as a serious violation of constitutional rights and a threat to public confidence in law enforcement.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the NBA President, Afam Osigwe (SAN), said the association was disturbed by a viral video showing the incident, as well as confirmation by the police that the officer involved would face a murder charge.
The association said the act amounted to an abuse of power and undermines the rule of law, stressing that no law enforcement officer has the authority to bypass due process.
“No officer of the law, regardless of rank or circumstance, has the right to act as prosecutor, judge, and executioner,” the statement read.
The NBA emphasised that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees the right to life and fair hearing, adding that every individual is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of law.
It warned that failure to address such incidents decisively could deepen a culture of impunity within the system.
“If such unlawful actions by security agencies continue unchecked, fundamental rights may not amount to much in such a climate of impunity,” the association stated.
While acknowledging that the Nigeria Police Force has arrested the officer involved, the NBA insisted that accountability must go beyond a single individual.
“The viral video clearly shows that other policemen aided or were involved in this heinous act. The investigation, arrest and prosecution process must extend to any other officer who may have counselled, aided, or abetted the extrajudicial killing,” it added.

The incident reportedly involved a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, who was shot by an Assistant Superintendent of Police, identified as Usman Nuhu, during an operation in Effurun on April 26, 2026.
Police authorities had earlier stated that the suspect was arrested while allegedly transporting a parcel suspected to contain a firearm.
However, the officer was said to have discharged his weapon in violation of operational guidelines, including Force Order 237, leading to the suspect’s death.
The Delta State Police Command has since initiated internal disciplinary proceedings, confirming the arrest and transfer of the officer to Abuja for further investigation.
The NBA also directed its Human Rights Committees in Warri, Effurun, and Udu to monitor the case closely and ensure that justice is served.
The association stressed that the incident underscores the urgent need for comprehensive police reforms, particularly in areas of accountability, use of force, and protection of citizens’ rights.
