Civil servants in Rivers State could soon see an increase in their allowances, following signals from the state government during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration.
Speaking at the event held at Isaac Boro Park on Friday, May 1, the Deputy Governor, Professor Ngozi Odu, who represented Governor Siminalayi Fubara, said the administration remains committed to improving workers’ welfare and boosting economic conditions in the state.
She noted that the government would continue to implement policies aimed at stimulating economic growth, creating jobs, and raising living standards.
Odu also pointed to the success of the state’s small and micro enterprise fund, which she said has supported entrepreneurs and strengthened local businesses.
The deputy governor assured organised labour that the government would honour its commitments, signalling ongoing engagement with workers on issues affecting their welfare.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Rivers State, Alex Agwanwor, praised the government for measures already taken to support workers.
He highlighted the payment of an ₦85,000 minimum wage, the ₦100,000 Christmas bonus, the revival of the state transport company, and the rehabilitation of the state secretariat complex.
However, Agwanwor also outlined fresh demands from labour, including the scrapping of the contributory pension scheme and an extension of the retirement age from 60 to 65 years, or from 35 to 40 years of service.
He further called for the implementation of a consolidated legislative salary structure, a review of service allowances to improve morale, and the recruitment of more nurses to strengthen the state’s healthcare sector.
The Workers’ Day celebration served as a platform for both government and labour leaders to highlight achievements, present demands, and outline expectations for improved working conditions in the state.
