Peter Obi Salutes Nigerian Nurses, Midwives On World Nurses Day

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has praised Nigerian nurses and midwives for their commitment and sacrifices in sustaining the country’s healthcare system despite prevailing challenges.

In a message shared on his official X account on Tuesday, to mark the 2026 World Nurses Day celebration, Obi described nurses and midwives as the backbone of Nigeria’s health sector, acknowledging their vital contributions to healthcare delivery nationwide.

According to him, healthcare professionals in the nursing field continue to demonstrate courage and resilience while operating under difficult conditions, including inadequate facilities, shortage of medical equipment, and heavy patient workloads.

Obi noted that nurses remain central to the survival of the nation’s healthcare system, stressing that their dedication has kept hospitals and medical institutions functioning across the country.

The former Anambra State governor also revealed that he had consistently supported nursing and midwifery institutions across Nigeria over the years because of the strategic importance of the profession to national growth and healthcare development.

He commended Nigerian nurses for not only excelling within the country but also making remarkable impacts internationally through clinical practice, research, and healthcare innovation.

Obi added that his vision for a “New Nigeria” includes a healthcare sector where the efforts and sacrifices of nurses and other health workers would be properly recognised and rewarded.
