FG Introduces Unified Tax ID System To Streamline Tax Collection

The Federal Government has unveiled a new unified Tax Identification system aimed at simplifying tax administration, improving transparency, and enhancing compliance across the country.

The Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS) said the new Tax ID framework would serve as a single identity for taxpayers, allowing seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and state levels.

According to the agency, the initiative is designed to consolidate taxpayer records, eliminate duplication, and improve the management of tax-related information nationwide.

“The Tax ID will serve as a single, unified identity for all taxpayers, enabling seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels,” the agency stated.

The NRS explained that the reform would simplify major tax processes, including registration, tax filing, and payment procedures for individuals and businesses.

It added that the new digital framework is expected to strengthen transparency and accountability in tax collection by improving visibility into taxpayer data and reducing leakages within the system.

“The system will improve transparency by enabling better visibility and tracking of taxpayer records while reducing leakages and improving accountability in tax collection,” the agency said.

The revenue authority further noted that the new framework would harmonise taxpayer information across all tiers of government as part of broader efforts to modernise Nigeria’s tax ecosystem.

As part of the transition, the agency disclosed that the new Tax ID platform would replace the existing Tax Identification Number (TIN) Validation API currently used by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), financial institutions, and other organisations.

Organisations requiring integration and validation services for individuals, enterprises, and business names were advised to contact the Standardisation and Modernisation Department of the Joint Revenue Board for access to the new API and implementation guidelines.

Similarly, organisations involved in corporate entity validation were directed to liaise with the Tax Automation Department of the Nigerian Revenue Service.

The reform forms part of ongoing efforts by revenue authorities to digitise Nigeria’s tax administration system and improve revenue generation through technology-driven compliance measures.
