Benue Forest: Newborn Rescued Alive From Carton

A newborn baby girl has been rescued alive after she was allegedly abandoned in a carton near Ashar Forest, Wuese community, Konshisha Local Government Area of Benue State.

The infant was found on Saturday, August 29, 2026, by resident Mrs Mbakasev Yisa, who reportedly heard sounds from the carton.

She was wrapped in clothes, with witnesses alleging that maggots were found around her body and that the carton emitted a foul odour.

Terkumbur Gabriel Mbaukaan, a councillor representing the area, confirmed the incident in Makurdi on Sunday, August 30, saying the baby was in critical condition.

He said Yisa alerted a police outpost, prompting officers to visit the scene, document the discovery and direct that the child be taken for urgent medical care.

Mbaukaan said a nearby clinic initially declined admission because of the baby’s condition, after which she was taken to Dooshima Clinic in Wuese, where she was admitted.

The infant was reportedly receiving glucose and NAN infant formula while undergoing treatment.

Wuese youth leader, Udigi Waya, said the baby may have been abandoned for about three days before she was found.

However, Benue State Police spokesman, DSP Peter Aondongu, said on Sunday that the command had not received an official report. He added that the Konshisha Divisional Police Officer was unaware of the incident.

The identity of the baby’s mother and circumstances surrounding the alleged abandonment remained unknown.

The incident echoes a March 19, 2024 case in Minna, Niger State, where a newborn was found alive in a carton behind Bosso Estate and later placed under the care of the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.
