Abia State Governor, Alex Chioma Otti, has announced the introduction of an electric vehicle public transport system known as the Abia Green Shuttle Service, designed to modernise the state’s transport network and promote clean energy adoption.
According to a statement released on Saturday, October 11, 2025, by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the initiative is part of Otti’s long-term plan to build a modern, sustainable, and climate-friendly public transport system across the state.
Ukoha said the Green Shuttle reflects the administration’s commitment to environmental responsibility and aligns with national and global climate action goals.
“The Abia Green Shuttle Service is part of Governor Otti’s futuristic vision for a modern, clean, and efficient public transportation system that reduces carbon emissions and improves mobility for all residents,” he stated.
Under the first phase of the project, the state government has procured 20 electric buses for deployment in Aba and Umuahia, while approval has been granted for an additional 20 buses, bringing the total fleet to 40 units before the end of 2025.
The electric buses, being fabricated in China, are expected to arrive in November 2025.
Driver training, route mapping, and infrastructure installation are already in progress ahead of the rollout.
To support the new system, the government has commenced construction of two modern transport terminals in Aba and Umuahia to serve as operational bases for the Green Shuttle Service.
Each terminal will feature charging stations, maintenance workshops, and passenger facilities.
The project also includes the installation of 10 electric charging stations across the two cities, with plans to expand to 20 stations by 2026.
Each station will have capacity to charge multiple vehicles simultaneously.
Governor Otti said the electric vehicle transport scheme would significantly reduce fuel costs, improve air quality, and make transportation more inclusive for residents.

“The Green Shuttle Service is a bold step into the future. It is a practical demonstration of our commitment to sustainability and a better quality of life for our people,” he said.
The administration has also introduced wheelchair-accessible buses to ensure inclusion for persons with disabilities.
Transport operators across the state will be integrated into the system through a regulated franchise model that allows private participation under approved routes and schedules.
The Green Shuttle Service complements ongoing urban renewal efforts in Aba and Umuahia, including drainage rehabilitation, smart street lighting, and traffic management upgrades.
With the first phase expected to commence before the end of 2025, Abia State is set to become one of the first subnational governments in Nigeria to operate a fully electric public transport fleet.
