The Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Bathiya Wesley, has denied reports that he plans to defect from the All Progressives Congress to the Action Peoples Movement.
The speculation followed the defection of former Speaker and Yola South State Constituency lawmaker, Kabiru Mijinyawa, who joined the APM on Monday, September 14, 2026, alongside thousands of supporters.
Mijinyawa resigned from the APC in a letter dated September 13, citing concerns over the conduct of the party’s recent primaries and its internal decision-making process.
His exit came two days after APC chieftain Tahir Shehu led another group of party members to the APM.
Reports subsequently linked Wesley to a possible APM move, allegedly to pursue a House of Representatives ticket.

But the Speaker’s Press Secretary, Bernard Hyellamada, dismissed the report as false, insisting that Wesley would remain in the APC through the 2027 general elections.
“Let me tell you categorically that the Speaker is not going anywhere. He remains in APC till after 2027 general elections,” Hyellamada said.
Wesley himself joined the APC earlier this year. On February 26, 2026, he and 14 other members of the Assembly defected from the Peoples Democratic Party amid the party’s internal crisis.
The latest defections have heightened political realignment in Adamawa ahead of the 2027 elections, with disagreements over the APC’s primaries adding to tensions within the party.
Wesley, however, has ruled out joining the latest wave of defections.
