Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has declared Monday, September 14, 2026, a work-free day in honour of former Gongola State governor and ex-National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.
Tukur, 90, died in Abuja on Saturday, September 12, and was buried in Yola on Sunday after funeral prayers at the Lamido of Adamawa’s Palace Mosque.
Fintiri, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, said the directive would give residents an opportunity to honour the late statesman and reflect on his contributions to the state and country.
He urged residents to pray for the repose of Tukur’s soul and comfort for his family and associates.

The declaration forms part of a three-day mourning period announced by the state government. Flags are to fly at half-mast throughout the period, while essential services remain operational.
Tukur served as governor of the former Gongola State in 1983 before the military coup that ended the Second Republic. He later served as General Manager of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Minister of Industries and PDP National Chairman from 2012 to 2014.
His burial attracted political leaders, traditional rulers, business figures, family members and other mourners to Yola.
Born on September 15, 1935, Tukur’s career spanned state leadership, federal service, business and national politics, leaving him closely associated with the political history of the former Gongola State.
