Adelabu Says Tinubu Approved His Resignation As Power Minister

The immediate past Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has clarified that his resignation from the Federal Executive Council was approved by Bola Tinubu, dismissing contrary reports as unfounded.

In a statement issued on Saturday through his media aide, Femi Awogboro, Adelabu said claims suggesting he stepped down against the President’s wishes were “baseless.”

Adelabu actually obtained the full approval and blessing of President Tinubu before taking the decision to resign. Those spreading false speculations should desist,” the statement read.

He also dismissed criticisms surrounding his exit, attributing them to reactions over the large crowd that welcomed him back to Ibadan after leaving office.

Adelabu formally resigned in a letter dated April 22, 2026, addressed to the President through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

His resignation is linked to plans to pursue the governorship of Oyo State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The move follows a directive from the Presidency requiring political appointees seeking elective office to resign on or before March 31, 2026, in line with provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, and guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission for party primaries.
