Nigeria’s 12-match unbeaten streak came to an end on Wednesday night after the Super Eagles suffered a 2-1 defeat to Portugal in an international friendly in Lisbon.
Despite missing key stars Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, the three-time African champions delivered an impressive performance against the European side but were ultimately undone by a late goal.
Portugal took the lead in the 23rd minute through Pedro Neto, who finished off a well-worked move to put the hosts ahead.
The Super Eagles responded positively and were rewarded in the 37th minute when Akor Adams found the back of the net to restore parity. The striker capitalised on Nigeria’s growing influence in the contest to make it 1-1 before halftime.
Both sides created opportunities after the break, with Nigeria showing resilience and attacking intent despite the absence of several regular starters.
However, Portugal regained the advantage in the 75th minute when Fábio Conceição struck to make it 2-1, a goal that ultimately proved decisive.

The Super Eagles pushed for another equaliser in the closing stages but were unable to find a way past the Portuguese defence as the hosts held on for victory.
Although the result ended Nigeria’s impressive unbeaten run, the performance offered positives for head coach Eric Chelle, with several players stepping up against high-quality opposition.
Akor Adams’ goal was one of the highlights of the evening, while the Super Eagles demonstrated character and competitiveness throughout the encounter despite missing some of their biggest attacking stars.
The defeat marks Nigeria’s first loss in 12 matches and provides valuable lessons as the team continues preparations for upcoming international assignments.
