Algerian FA Files Formal Complaint Against Referee After AFCON Loss to Nigeria

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has formally lodged complaints with both FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over refereeing decisions in their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 quarter-final defeat to Nigeria.

Algeria was eliminated after a 2-0 loss to the Super Eagles, a result that has sparked controversy over the performance of Senegalese referee Issa Sy, who officiated the match.

In a statement, the Algerian FA criticized key refereeing calls during the game, saying they “raised questions and left widespread dissatisfaction, as they undermined the credibility of African refereeing and do not serve the image of African football on the international stage.”

The statement added that Algeria has formally petitioned CAF and FIFA, requesting an investigation to clarify the decisions and ensure accountability.

“Accordingly, we have contacted CAF, as well as FIFA, by filing an official complaint accompanied by a request to open an investigation, in order to clarify what happened and take appropriate measures in accordance with the applicable regulations,” it read.

The petition underscores growing concerns over officiating standards in AFCON and could lead to disciplinary reviews or procedural changes ahead of future tournaments. Both CAF and FIFA are yet to comment on the matter.
