CAF Switches Referee as Nigeria, Algeria Set for Explosive AFCON Quarter-final

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Senegalese official Issa Sy as the referee for Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final clash between Nigeria and Algeria in Marrakech.

Sy replaces Somali referee Omar Artan, who was initially selected for the encounter before CAF opted for a change following mounting concerns and tensions over officiating standards at the ongoing tournament.

The Senegalese referee is already familiar with the 2025 AFCON, having served as Video Assistant Referee during the group-stage fixture between hosts Morocco and Tanzania.

His appointment is widely viewed as a move aimed at easing anxiety ahead of what promises to be a fiercely contested tie.

Nigeria and Algeria are both chasing a semi-final berth after impressive routes to the last eight.

The Super Eagles secured their place with a commanding 4-0 win over Mozambique, while Algeria edged past the Democratic Republic of Congo 1-0 after extra time.

Saturday’s showdown also rekindles memories of the 2019 AFCON semi-final, where Algeria claimed a dramatic 2-1 victory, sealed by Riyad Mahrez’s late free-kick.

Kick-off is scheduled for 5pm Nigerian time, with expectations high for another intense chapter in the rivalry between two of Africa’s football heavyweights.
