Amnesty Demands Public Trial Over Alleged Police Killing In Delta

Amnesty International Nigeria has called on the Federal Government to launch a transparent investigation into the alleged extrajudicial killing of a 28-year-old man, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the organisation condemned the incident, describing it as a grave violation of the right to life and a troubling reflection of persistent concerns about police conduct in the country.

Ogidi was reportedly shot dead on April 26 during a police operation involving an officer identified as ASP Nuhu Usman. Amnesty International insisted that the circumstances surrounding the killing must be thoroughly examined and made public.

“It is deeply disturbing that an unarmed individual who posed no threat was shot at close range,” the group said, stressing that the use of lethal force cannot be justified except as a last resort under international human rights standards.

According to the Nigeria Police Force, the incident occurred after Ogidi was apprehended while attempting to transport a parcel suspected to contain a firearm, reportedly a Beretta pistol with ammunition.

The Delta State Police Command acknowledged that the officer’s actions violated Force Order 237 and established operational procedures.

Authorities confirmed that the officer has since been arrested and transferred to Abuja for further investigation, while internal disciplinary measures are ongoing.

Police authorities have reiterated their stance against extrajudicial actions, assuring that due process will be followed in handling the case.

Amnesty International, however, warned that the killing highlights what it described as a worrying resurgence of police brutality.

The organisation urged the government to ensure accountability, including a public trial, to restore confidence in law enforcement institutions.

The group also called for reforms to align policing practices with global human rights standards, emphasising that unlawful killings must not go unpunished.
