Anambra Cuts February Salary Over Sit-At-Home Absences

The government of Anambra State said on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, that it had slashed February 2026 salaries of workers who stayed away from duty on Mondays previously observed as sit-at-home days linked to directives of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

Officials stated that attendance records showed some civil servants were absent without approved leave on the affected days.

Salary deductions, they said, reflected non-working days in line with public service regulations.

The Head of Service noted that attendance is mandatory for public employees and that adjustments were made only for days not worked.

Workers with valid leave approvals were advised to submit documentation for verification.

Labour unions criticised the move, arguing that security concerns surrounding the sit-at-home orders discouraged some employees from reporting to work.

Union representatives called for dialogue with the government on attendance policies and worker safety.

Authorities said engagement with stakeholders would continue to balance service delivery with security realities.
