Anambra Police Investigate Okpoko Officers Over PoS Extortion Allegations

The Anambra State Police Command has launched an urgent investigation after a video surfaced showing officers from the Okpoko Divisional Police in Onitsha allegedly forcing a man to pay money through a point-of-sale (PoS) terminal to avoid detention.

The footage, widely shared on social media, claims the officers seized the man’s belongings and ordered a cash transfer to an undisclosed account.

A voiceover suggested such demands were a regular practice in the Okpoko area, near Onitsha’s bustling commercial centre.

In a statement on Monday, March 16, 2026, Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the video is under review.

He said Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu ordered a full-scale investigation to identify any officers involved and take appropriate disciplinary action.

“The DPO of Okpoko has already begun efforts to identify the officers implicated. The money allegedly collected has been returned, highlighting serious unprofessional conduct,” the statement said.

The command also flagged the PoS operator’s possible role, describing it as a potential conspiracy that will be examined as part of the inquiry.

SP Ikenga assured the public that no officer would be protected if found guilty, stressing the command’s commitment to accountability, professionalism, and safeguarding citizens’ rights.

Further updates will be shared as the investigation progresses.
