Army Chief Pledges Total Elimination of Criminal Safe Havens

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has issued a stern warning to insurgent groups and bandits, declaring that the Nigerian Army is intensifying efforts to dismantle their hideouts across all geographical terrains.

During an operational visit to the 2 Division of the Nigerian Army in Ibadan this Monday, the 22nd of December, 2025, the COAS made it clear that the military is shifting to a more aggressive posture.

He noted that the era of criminals utilizing the country’s vast natural landscapes to evade justice is coming to an end.

“They must understand that they cannot hide anywhere. Rain or shine, in forests, deserts, or mountains, we will go after them,” he said.

The COAS identified that criminal elements have historically exploited inaccessible regions to launch strikes against civilians. To counter this, he has mandated an increase in nocturnal military activity and the strategic domination of key terrains to paralyze the mobility of bandits.

Addressing specific regional threats, Lt. Gen. Shaibu pointed to emerging security concerns within Kwara State, as well as the Kainji Lake and Old Oyo National Parks.

“Orders have been given to clear all criminal elements from these areas. We are determined to remove anyone causing trouble in these terrains,” he said.

After receiving briefings from the General Officer Commanding (GOC) and his senior staff, the Army Chief expressed confidence in the current command structure.

He lauded the officers for their precision and urged them to maintain a “lead from the front” philosophy, which he cited as the backbone of successful military engagements.

Beyond tactical directives, the COAS used the visit to reinforce the military’s commitment to the men and women in uniform. He emphasized that operational success is inextricably linked to the morale and living conditions of the troops.
