Bayelsa Declares Work-Free Day, Shuts Markets Ahead Of Tinubu Visit

The Bayelsa State Government has declared Friday a work-free day and ordered the closure of markets across the state in preparation for the visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The announcement was made on Thursday in Yenagoa by the Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai.

According to the commissioner, the decision is aimed at ensuring maximum participation of residents in activities lined up for the President’s one-day official visit.

“As a state, we are fully prepared to receive the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” she said, adding that the visit is an opportunity for citizens to engage with national leadership and witness key developmental milestones.

During the visit, President Tinubu is expected to inaugurate several major infrastructure projects, including a state-owned gas turbine at Opolo-Elebele, a 60-kilometre dual carriageway stretching from Onopa to the LNG axis, and a 630-metre bridge linking Angiama to Oporoma in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

Residents, particularly traders and business owners, have been urged to comply with the directive and participate in welcoming the President.

The government noted that the temporary restrictions are necessary to ensure a smooth, secure, and successful visit.

For many residents, the visit represents more than a ceremonial engagement—it is seen as a moment of visibility for the state’s development efforts and an opportunity to showcase ongoing projects aimed at improving infrastructure and economic growth.

Authorities reassured citizens that normal activities would resume after the visit, while calling for cooperation to make the event hitch-free.
