Residents and supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) at the weekend staged a carnival-like reception in Bayelsa State for Architect Reuben Okoya, Hon. Diepreye Leghemo and Hon. Mrs. Esther Saiyou following their defection to the party.
The colourful gathering, held in Yenagoa, drew thousands of party faithful, youths, women and political stakeholders, who turned out chanting solidarity songs and waving banners in celebration of the new political alignment.
Speaking during the reception, Okoya and Leghemo expressed gratitude to the leadership of the NDC for providing what they described as a credible platform committed to rescuing Nigeria and strengthening democratic ideals.
The duo particularly praised the National Leader of the party, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, for what they called his visionary leadership and courage in establishing the Nigeria Democratic Congress at a critical time in the country’s political journey.
According to them, the emergence of the NDC has revived hope among Nigerians seeking purposeful leadership, accountability and people-centred governance.
They stated that the growing acceptance of the party across Bayelsa State and other parts of the country reflects Nigerians’ desire for a fresh political direction capable of addressing the nation’s challenges.

The defection of the political figures is being seen by party supporters as a major boost for the NDC in Bayelsa State ahead of future elections.
Bayelsa State Chairman of the party, Hon. Dauperebo Ikuromo, described Senator Dickson as “a defender of multiparty democracy in Nigeria,” expressing confidence that the party would continue attracting respected politicians and grassroots mobilisers across the country.
Also speaking, Chief Suru Oyarede of the Bayelsa West Caucus and Chief Nengi Talboth of the Bayelsa East Caucus said the time had come for politicians to align with the NDC, insisting that the party was on the path to victory in future elections.
Party members at the event reaffirmed their commitment to building what they described as a strong political movement focused on unity, development and service to the people.
Among dignitaries present at the reception were Chief Nengi James, Hon. Selekebina Saboh and Comrade Doubara Kumokou, among others.
