Former Nigeria coach Jo Bonfrere has claimed that he is yet to receive his Olympic gold medal, three decades after guiding the country’s men’s football team to a historic triumph at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.
Bonfrere played a key role in Nigeria’s memorable campaign, which saw the country win gold in men’s football and become the first African nation to achieve the feat at the Olympics.
However, the Dutch tactician says the recognition associated with the historic achievement remains incomplete, alleging that he has not received his medal despite the passage of 30 years.
Nigeria made history at the Atlanta Games in 1996 after defeating some of the tournament’s biggest football nations on their way to the gold medal.
The team, popularly known as the Dream Team, defeated Brazil in the semi-final before overcoming Argentina 3-2 in the final to secure the historic victory.

The triumph remains one of the most celebrated moments in Nigerian football, cementing the team’s place in the country’s sporting history.
Bonfrere’s claim has raised questions about why the former coach has allegedly not received his medal for an achievement that brought Nigeria international recognition.
The reported development also puts the spotlight on the recognition and welfare of coaches who contribute to major sporting successes.
Despite the historic accomplishment, the unresolved medal issue, if confirmed, would represent an unusual situation involving one of Nigeria’s most significant football achievements.
