Grammy-winning Nigerian artiste, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has revealed that his stage name originated from a childhood incident in Port Harcourt.
Speaking about the misconception surrounding the name, Burna Boy explained that contrary to popular belief, it was not inspired by smoking or his love for cannabis. Instead, it came after he accidentally caused a fire in his family’s home at the age of six.
According to him, he had been playing with a lighter in the kitchen when the gas caught fire, sparking panic in the household.
His mother quickly contained the flames using a fire extinguisher, preventing what could have been a major disaster.

He said his grandfather jokingly began calling him “Burna Boy” after the incident, and the nickname eventually stuck, becoming the stage name he now carries as one of Africa’s biggest music stars.
The singer, who has often been compared to Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti, emphasized that his name was born out of family humour rather than any symbolic attachment to his music.
