The Department of State Services (DSS) will on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, arraign activist Omoyele Sowore and social media companies X (formerly Twitter) and Meta, the owners of Facebook and Instagram, over alleged false claims against President Bola Tinubu.
The case, listed as FHC/ABJ/CR/484/2025, is scheduled for hearing at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The defendants are facing a five-count charge filed in the name of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
According to court papers, Sowore allegedly described President Tinubu as a “criminal” and claimed that the President was lying when he said corruption no longer exists in his administration.
The DSS insists these statements are untrue and intended to mislead the public.
Prosecutors are relying on the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024, as well as sections of the Criminal Code Act that deal with defamation and the spread of false information.

The charges accuse Sowore of posting false claims on both X and Facebook and making comments that could cause public alarm.
The DSS also stated that it had earlier written to Meta and X, asking them to remove the content before going to court.
The trial is expected to raise new questions about the responsibility of individuals and social media companies for online content that the government considers defamatory.
