The Director‑General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, has ordered the release of Kenneth Okechukwu Nwafor, who had been in custody since July 2022 over alleged links to the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).
Nwafor, a native of Isuikwuato Local Government Area, Abia State, was released on 24 November 2025.
A thorough review of his case by DSS investigators found no evidence to justify his detention.
Alongside his release, the agency awarded him ₦5 million in compensation and provided free medical care.
Sources said three other men from Abia State, also accused of IPOB membership, were released at the same time.
The DSS leadership has reportedly been reviewing all inherited cases to ensure individuals are not held without substantiated evidence.

Observers describe the release as part of an ongoing effort by Ajayi’s administration to correct wrongful detentions and uphold due process within the agency.
One insider said: “When mistakes happen, they must be corrected, and justice restored.”
The move follows earlier releases by the DSS under Ajayi, including three men accused of IPOB/ESN affiliation earlier this year, signaling a broader shift towards human rights compliance and procedural fairness.
