Nigeria’s hosting of the 48th Confederation of African Football (CAF) Ordinary General Assembly and the 2026 CAF Awards has come under scrutiny following the confirmation of an Ebola case in Abuja.
The General Assembly is scheduled for November 21, while the CAF Awards will hold in Lagos on December 7, 2026.
However, as of press time on Wednesday, October 21, CAF had yet to issue an official statement on whether the development would affect either event. No postponement or relocation has been announced.
The Federal Government confirmed the Ebola case on Tuesday, October 20, after an individual who travelled to Nigeria by air from Uganda tested positive for the Bundibugyo virus disease, a strain of Ebola.
Health authorities have commenced contact tracing and other public health measures to prevent further transmission.
The development could introduce additional health and logistical considerations for the planned gatherings, which are expected to attract football administrators and other participants from across Africa.
Depending on how the situation develops, organisers may need to strengthen health monitoring, emergency medical arrangements and coordination with relevant authorities to address potential risks.
However, the confirmation of a single case does not automatically mean the events will be cancelled, with any decision likely to depend on public health assessments and CAF’s position.

Preparations for the events were already underway before the case was confirmed.
The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, received a CAF delegation led by Dr Christian Emeruwa at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday as part of efforts to prepare for the two gatherings.
The visit followed the delegation’s inspection of facilities and engagements with relevant agencies, institutions and stakeholders in Lagos, alongside ongoing assessments in Abuja.
During the meeting, Dikko assured CAF of the Federal Government’s commitment to successfully hosting both events, stressing the need for coordinated planning and cooperation among the relevant institutions.
He also disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had approved Nigeria’s hosting initiative following engagements with CAF leadership on the sidelines of the Africa Forward Summit in Kenya.
The Ebola case now adds a public health dimension to the preparations, with authorities expected to prioritise containment and clear communication.
For now, Nigeria’s hosting plans remain unchanged. Whether the development affects the General Assembly or the CAF Awards will depend on the evolving health situation and any subsequent announcement by CAF.
