The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc (EEDC) has commenced the second phase of its free prepaid meter rollout under “Tranche B” of the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) metering programme.
The initiative, instituted by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), aims to close the existing metering gap in the power sector and eliminate estimated billing. EEDC distributes electricity across the South-East, covering Anambra, Imo, Enugu, Abia, and Ebonyi states.
In a statement on Tuesday, EEDC’s Group Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, said Tranche B targets unmetered customers on service band “A” feeders across the South-East. “These meters and their installation are free, and customers are cautioned against making any form of payment to meter installers or succumbing to any form of inducement or extortion,” he said.
Ezeh added that 13,335 customers, including those of EEDC’s subsidiary companies, will benefit in this phase, which began on November 2, 2025, with a Know Your Customer validation exercise.
He noted that Tranche A of the MAF metering programme, completed earlier this year, had provided meters to 13,614 Band “A” customers. Once all Band “A” customers are metered, attention will shift to Band “B” customers as part of a systematic effort to close the metering gap across the network.

Ezeh urged customers not to engage in meter bypass, energy theft, or other illegal activities and to report any such incidents. He also encouraged customers to update their contact information at their local Customer Service Unit to facilitate the metering exercise.

The Meter Acquisition Fund is a nationwide initiative, funded by contributions from all electricity distribution companies, for the procurement and free deployment of prepaid meters under the oversight of a fund manager and NERC.
