The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has directed that an official apology be extended to staff of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, following an incident involving operatives of the commission.
The directive follows a preliminary review of the encounter which took place on May 12, 2026, and reportedly involved EFCC personnel and hospital workers, including the Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, Professor Eyo Ekpe, alongside members of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).
In a statement issued on his verified X handle on Monday, May 18, 2026, Olukoyede said the commission had reviewed the circumstances of the incident and taken into account concerns raised by the public and the medical community.
He said the development fell short of expected professional standards and expressed regret over the disruption caused at the hospital.

Olukoyede also confirmed that a full investigation has been ordered into the matter to establish what transpired, adding that any officer found to have acted outside approved conduct would face disciplinary action.
He further said the EFCC would continue to engage relevant stakeholders, including the medical community, to prevent a repeat of similar incidents.
Despite the development, the EFCC chairman reiterated that the commission remains firmly focused on its mandate of tackling economic and financial crimes across the country.
He also called for sustained cooperation from the Nigerian Medical Association and other professional bodies in strengthening accountability and supporting anti-corruption efforts in Nigeria.
