The Abia State government has moved to allay concerns from private operators, asserting that its initiative to introduce electric buses is not intended to undermine the business operations of existing transport companies.
The clarification was issued on Thursday, the 13th of November, 2025, by the State’s Commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Ukaegbu, during an official visit to the Abia Line Network Company in Umuahia.
Ukaegbu explained that the planned electric buses are specifically designated for urban mass transit. He stressed that this move is aimed at promoting state development and incentivizing other transport operators to enhance the quality of their services.
The Commissioner also highlighted the construction of a central bus terminal in Umuahia, an initiative under Governor Alex Otti’s administration. He stated that the terminal is designed to rationalize the state capital’s transport system, serving as a unified, “one-stop hub for all transport companies.”

During his visit, Ukaegbu encouraged the management and staff of the Abia Line Network Company to exhibit greater effort, cooperate as a cohesive team, avoid complacency, and ensure they “give their best to achieve meaningful and desired results.”
In response, the chairman of the Abia State Transport Corporation, Emmanuel Ufomba, pledged his company’s full support for the government’s efforts. Ufomba, however, also requested that the state take steps to repair the company’s dilapidated physical structures.
