Esiovwa-Thompson Wins Nigeria’s First Commonwealth Fencing Gold

Sixteen-year-old Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson has made history by winning Nigeria’s first-ever gold medal at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships.

Esiovwa-Thompson achieved the feat in the men’s Under-23 epee event at Rugby School Nigeria in Atlantic City, Lagos, on Sunday, defeating India’s Asian champion, Lokesh Vemani, 15–5 in the final.

His victory marks a major breakthrough for Nigerian fencing, making him the first Nigerian athlete to win a medal at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships and the first to secure gold for the country at an international fencing competition.

Representing Nigeria for the first time after switching allegiance from England, the teenager produced a dominant run throughout the competition, overcoming three Indian opponents on his way to the title.

India’s Godwin Natarajan and Ashwini Shaurya claimed the bronze medals.

Esiovwa-Thompson began his campaign in Pool 4, where he remained unbeaten to finish top of his group and secure a bye into the round of 16.

He then defeated South Africa’s Karabo Mathobela 15–7 in the first knockout round before producing an even more commanding display against India’s Shivaansh Kapoor, whom he beat 15–2 in the quarter-final.

The semi-final presented a tougher challenge as he faced Ashwini Shaurya. However, Esiovwa-Thompson held his nerve in front of the home crowd to secure a 15–11 victory and book his place in the final.

The achievement adds to an impressive junior career for the teenager.

Before choosing to represent Nigeria, Esiovwa-Thompson had already recorded notable international results while competing for England.

He won gold in the Under-13 boys’ epee event at the 2022 Wratislavia Challenge and later earned a bronze medal in the cadet men’s epee team event in Naples.

His decision to switch allegiance to Nigeria has now culminated in one of the most significant achievements in the country’s fencing history.

The historic victory also provides a major boost for fencing in Nigeria, with Esiovwa-Thompson’s performance highlighting the potential of young Nigerian athletes on the international stage.

Meanwhile, England’s Oliver Strange claimed the tournament’s first gold medal after defeating India’s Manoj Patil in the men’s Under-23 foil final.

India’s Singh Sanasam and England’s Thomas James won the bronze medals in the event.

Esiovwa-Thompson’s triumph is expected to further raise the profile of fencing in Nigeria as the country continues its participation in the Commonwealth Fencing Championships.
