The Benue State Government has pledged to take action against shadow political pressure groups accused of attempting to destabilise the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement on Friday, Solomon Semaka, Principal Special Assistant to the Governor on National Programs, Civil Society, Mass Voter Education, and Strategic Interventions, said the government had received multiple petitions from concerned stakeholders.
“The Benue State Government has received multiple petitions from stakeholders calling for a thorough investigation into the proliferation of emergency shadow political pressure groups across the state.
“Their sole motive is to destabilize the state ahead of the 2027 general elections,” the statement read.
Semaka described the situation as “troubling and disheartening,” noting that some of the alleged sponsors are public servants and elected officials who should be prioritising citizens’ welfare instead of pursuing personal interests.
To address the concerns, the government has set up a Special Monitoring Committee (SMC) to investigate the activities of these groups and their sponsors.
The findings will be forwarded to the office of the National Security Adviser for further action.
The government assured residents of its commitment to maintaining stability, working closely with security agencies to prevent any disruptions.
