Ex-AGF Aondoakaa Resigns from APC, Signals New Political Direction Ahead of 2027

A former Attorney-General of the Federation, Michael Aondoakaa, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant shift in his political trajectory ahead of the 2027 elections.

Aondoakaa announced his resignation in a statement personally signed and made available to journalists in Makurdi on Sunday.

He said the decision, which took effect from March 28, followed extensive consultations with his family, political associates, and supporters.

The former minister, who had been a leading governorship aspirant on the APC platform in Benue State, described the move as necessary in light of prevailing political circumstances.

“After careful reflection and wide consultations, it has become necessary for me to take this step in the overall interest of my people and democratic values,” he said.

Despite his exit from the ruling party, Aondoakaa expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as visionary leadership, while pledging continued support for the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He also acknowledged the role of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, in shaping the APC’s political landscape in Benue State, assuring him of his enduring respect.

Although he did not disclose his next political destination, Aondoakaa hinted at a forthcoming realignment, urging his supporters to remain calm and united.

“A new direction aimed at salvaging and repositioning Benue in the best interest of our people will be communicated in due course,” he added.

Aondoakaa’s political journey has seen multiple shifts over the years.

He previously left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2014 after serving as Attorney-General under the administration of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, before joining the APC in 2015.

His resignation comes just months after he revalidated his APC membership in Benue State, and follows his unsuccessful bid for the party’s governorship ticket in 2022, which was won by current governor Hyacinth Alia.

Aondoakaa had challenged the outcome of the primary election in court but was unsuccessful.

Political observers say his latest move could reshape alignments in Benue State, particularly as the race for the 2027 governorship election begins to gather momentum.

For many of his supporters, the resignation signals not just a departure from a party, but the beginning of a new political chapter that could influence the state’s future direction.
