The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially recognised a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) reportedly backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The development was reflected on INEC’s official website on Monday, where the electoral body published an updated list of the PDP’s national leadership following the party’s convention in Abuja.
At the centre of the recognition is Abdulrahman Mohammed, who is listed as National Chairman, alongside Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary, among other key party officials.
Both leaders emerged during the PDP National Convention held Sunday night at the Velodrome of the National Stadium in Abuja.
The exercise saw members of the NWC re-elected through a consensus arrangement after the dissolution of the party’s national caretaker committee.
Other members of the newly recognised leadership include Aaron Chukwuemeka as Deputy National Chairman (South), Yusufu Akirikwen as Deputy National Chairman (North), Kolawale Olabisi as Deputy National Secretary, and Odeyemi Oladiran as National Treasurer.

The list also features Umar Bature as National Organising Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed as National Publicity Secretary, Kamaldeen Ajibade as National Legal Adviser, and Ogunshe Adedayo as National Women Leader, among others occupying strategic positions within the party’s structure.
INEC’s recognition of the leadership signals a significant development in the internal dynamics of the opposition party, which has in recent times been grappling with factional divisions and leadership disputes.
For many party faithful, the outcome of the convention and subsequent recognition by the electoral body represents a crucial step toward stabilising the PDP ahead of future electoral contests.
However, it also raises questions about the broader implications for party unity and reconciliation among aggrieved stakeholders.
The PDP, one of Nigeria’s major political parties, has been navigating internal challenges as it seeks to reposition itself in the evolving political landscape, particularly in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
