A former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, has declared his bid for the Nasarawa State governorship under the All Progressives Congress (APC), expressing confidence in his chances if the party conducts a transparent primary ahead of the 2027 election.
Adamu spoke on Thursday, April 23, 2026, during a rally in Karu Local Government Area, where supporters gathered in large numbers to signal support for his ambition.
Represented by key members of his campaign organisation, the aspirant said a credible and inclusive primary would reflect the will of party members and give him the mandate, citing what he described as growing acceptance across the state.
His declaration comes amid political undercurrents within the Nasarawa APC over succession plans linked to Governor Abdullahi Sule, who is widely believed to favour Senator Ahmed Wadada as his successor.

Speaking at the rally, the Director of Operations and Command of the campaign, Adams Useni, said the turnout in Karu reflected the aspirant’s growing grassroots appeal, stressing the need for internal democracy within the party.
He noted that Adamu’s experience as a former police chief positions him to tackle the security challenges facing the state.
Also speaking, the Director of Contact and Mobilisation of the campaign, Isa Nathaniel, said more than 3,000 support groups from Karu LGA had indicated interest in mobilising for the rally.
Nathaniel maintained that any perceived endorsement of a preferred successor by the governor remains a personal position and does not bind members of the APC in the state.
He expressed confidence that party delegates would ultimately decide the outcome of the primaries, adding that Adamu remains well positioned to secure the ticket ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
