Explosives, Ammunition Discovered by Police at Kaduna Scrap Yard

A startling discovery in the Kudandan area of Kaduna South has raised security concerns as the Kaduna State Police Command announced the recovery of explosive ordnance and ammunition from a local scrap depot.

According to a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, Mansir Hassan, the dangerous materials were uncovered after a tip-off about suspicious items at a scavenging facility on the outskirts of the city.

Intelligence traced the cache to waste shipments recently brought in from Borno State, a region long affected by insurgent activity.

Promptly responding to the alert, a specialized team from the police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit was dispatched to the site.

The unit, under the direct supervision of its commander, conducted a detailed analysis and confirmed the presence of military-grade unexploded ordnance (UXO).

“The EOD team immediately evacuated the UXOs to a secure location, where they will be safely demolished in line with established safety protocols,” the statement read.

Further searches of the facility led to the recovery of additional weaponry, including:

A locally fabricated revolver pistol loaded with six rounds,

Fifteen rounds of 7.2mm live ammunition,

Three live cartridges,

And an assortment of other ammunition types.

In a decisive response, Commissioner of Police Muhammad Rabiu ordered the immediate sealing of the premises and a full security sweep of the area.

He emphasized the importance of public vigilance and warned against the risks of transporting materials from conflict zones.

“Scavengers must desist from accepting items originating from high-risk areas,” Rabiu stated, directing area commanders to ensure strict enforcement and immediate arrests of any violators.

This incident underscores the growing challenges of arms trafficking and the role informal sectors—like scavenging and recycling—may inadvertently play in threatening public safety.

The police continue to appeal for community cooperation and timely intelligence to preempt potential threats.
