Federal Government Begins 2.5km Enugu Road Project, Boosts Connectivity

The Federal Government has commenced the construction of a 2.5-kilometre road linking three rural communities in Enugu State, as part of efforts to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic activities in the area.

The Federal Commissioner representing Enugu State at the Federal Character Commission, Peter Ogbonna Eze, disclosed this during an interactive session with journalists in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to Eze, the road project connects Aji, Isiugwu, and Ufodo communities in Igboeze North Local Government Area and is expected to improve access to neighbouring Kogi State, as well as farms, schools, and local markets.

He explained that while the project was facilitated through his office, it is fully funded by the Federal Government. He added that the first kilometre of the road is nearing completion, with asphalt laying expected soon.

“This is a 2.5km road linking three communities. Once the asphalt is laid, we will move to commission it,” he said, noting that the project includes double drainage systems to ensure durability and effective water management.

Eze attributed his drive to initiate the project to the infrastructure-focused leadership of Peter Mbah, stating that federal representatives from the state are complementing ongoing development efforts.

He emphasised that improved road infrastructure would significantly enhance livelihoods by easing movement and boosting economic activities in the region.

Road is a critical aspect of development. It improves access to farms, schools, and markets, and ultimately enhances the quality of life of the people,” he added.

Beyond infrastructure, the commissioner reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to enforcing compliance with federal character principles across government institutions.

He warned that Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) that fail to adhere to equitable representation in recruitment and operations would face sanctions, including legal action.

According to him, the commission, under the leadership of Ayo Hulayat Omidiran, has intensified oversight, with several MDAs already responding positively to compliance directives.

Eze also commended the Petroleum Technology Development Fund scholarship programme for increased participation from the South-East, describing it as a positive shift toward greater regional inclusion in national opportunities.
