FG Partners Investors to Boost Local Battery, Solar Production

The Federal Government has entered into partnerships with private investors to establish local production of lithium batteries and solar components, in a move aimed at reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imports and boosting renewable energy capacity.

The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) confirmed in Abuja that agreements have been signed with international firms, including solar technology giant LONGi, to facilitate technology transfer and set up domestic manufacturing plants.

Director-General of the ECN, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, said Nigeria’s abundant lithium deposits provide a strong foundation for the initiative, noting that localising production would cut foreign exchange costs and make renewable energy more affordable.

“We are taking steps to localise and domesticate our technology. Nigeria has the resources to build its own renewable energy future,” Abdullahi stated.

As part of the plan, the government has launched a skills development drive to train youths in areas such as solar engineering, artificial intelligence, and microgrid design.

The programme, themed “Spark the Green Economy: Robovolt Brand Reveal and AI-Driven Microgrid Skills,” is expected to prepare young Nigerians for jobs in the emerging clean energy sector.

The initiative aligns with Nigeria’s target of generating at least 30 percent of its energy from renewable sources, while gradually reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Analysts say the policy could create thousands of jobs, lower the cost of solar systems, and strengthen Nigeria’s commitment to climate goals.

However, they caution that consistent investment, stable policy frameworks, and strong regulation will be crucial to its success.
