The Federal Government has announced a 30-day discount on petrol sold through the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), with public transport operators nationwide to receive priority.
Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, announced the measure on Thursday at a press briefing in Abuja on fuel prices and subsidy concerns.
Oyedele said the arrangement would initially last 30 days and was not a return to the former petrol subsidy regime.
He said the government would make petrol available at cost through NNPCL during the period, with public transporters prioritised.
The intervention comes amid sustained pressure from fuel and transportation costs. It also aligns with the government’s wider efforts to reduce transport expenses through alternative energy sources.

In September, President Bola Tinubu directed the expansion of the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme, which seeks to lower transport fares through compressed natural gas and other alternative energy sources.
The latest measure follows a separate NNPCL promotion that offered a ₦66-per-litre discount through its Fuel App from October 1 to 7 to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary.
Oyedele did not disclose the value of the new 30-day discount.
He reiterated that the government was pursuing targeted relief rather than restoring the blanket petrol subsidy abolished in 2023.
The new arrangement is expected to provide short-term relief for public transport operators and commuters as the government pursues longer-term measures to reduce transportation costs.
