Four Pupils Slain In Kampala School Machete Attack

A man armed with a machete killed four children during a brutal attack at a nursery school in Kampala on Thursday, April 2, 2026, Ugandan police have confirmed.

The assailant, identified as 34-year-old Christopher Okello, gained entry into the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Programme, located in the Makindye Division, by posing as a parent.

Investigators said this allowed him to bypass normal security checks at the school.

After a brief interaction with administrative staff, Okello stepped outside, locked the gate, and launched a sudden and deliberate assault on the children inside the compound.

Police confirmed that four pupils, three boys and one girl were killed in the attack. Their identities and ages have not been released.

Security personnel at the school intervened quickly, and the suspect was arrested at the scene.

He is currently in custody at Kabalagala Police Station, according to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala.

The attack sparked outrage among local residents, who gathered at the school and attempted to confront the suspect. Police fired warning shots to prevent mob violence, officials said.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive and investigations are ongoing. Security teams are reviewing how the suspect gained access to the school and are considering measures to strengthen safety at educational facilities.

While Uganda has faced security challenges in recent years, attacks of this nature, particularly targeting young children inside a school setting are rare in Kampala, a city of about three million people.
