The Nigerian gospel music community has been thrown into mourning following the death of renowned singer and evangelist, Bunmi Akinnaanu, widely celebrated for her inspirational hit Omije Ojumi.
Her passing was announced on Tuesday through a brief but emotional statement shared on Instagram by fellow gospel artiste Ayo Melody on behalf of her family.
The post, which included a photograph of the late singer and a video from the hospital, confirmed that Akinnaanu died on January 12, 2026, at a medical facility in Lagos.
“With great sadness, we announce the passing of Evangelist Olubunmi Akinnanu Adeoye, popularly known as Omije Ojumi. May God grant her eternal rest,” the statement read.
The news comes months after the gospel singer publicly sought prayers while battling a severe leg ailment.
In October 2025, during a church service at G.F David Ministries in Ibadan, Oyo State, a video circulated online showing Akinnaanu seated with her leg stretched out as she received prayers from a cleric.
An intravenous cannula was visibly attached to her hand, highlighting the seriousness of her condition.
At the service, the pastor disclosed that the singer had been suffering from persistent bleeding in her leg, which he described as a spiritual affliction.
He led prayers against what he termed the “spirit of death,” urging divine intervention for her healing.

Akinnaanu began her music journey at the age of 10 and later made the bold decision to leave a banking career to fully embrace gospel music.
She rose to national prominence with Omije Ojumi, a deeply emotional worship song that resonated with many Nigerian Christians and became a regular feature in churches and homes.
She later released other well-received gospel tracks, including O Ti Sure, further cementing her place in Nigeria’s gospel music space.
Following the announcement of her death, tributes have continued to pour in from fans, colleagues, and church communities, celebrating her life, faith, and lasting impact through music.
