The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has discredited a letter circulating online that claimed the electoral body approved the postponement of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ekiti State Congress and governorship primary.
The purported correspondence, dated November 10, 2025, was falsely attributed to INEC’s Secretary, Rose Anthony.
In a statement on Friday, November 21, Victoria Eta-Messi, INEC’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, clarified that the letter did not originate from any official INEC office.
“The attention of the Independent National Electoral Commission has been drawn to a correspondence currently in circulation on various platforms concerning the Resolution of the PDP National Working Committee Meeting and postponement of the Ekiti State Congress/Governorship Primary, purported to have been issued and signed by the Secretary to the commission.
“The commission hereby states unequivocally that the said correspondence did not emanate from the office of the Secretary to the commission, nor any official channel of INEC,” Eta-Messi explained.
The commission said preliminary checks revealed that the signature on the document had been forged.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the signature of the Secretary to the commission was forged by unscrupulous elements,” it added.

INEC warned the public, political parties, and media outlets to disregard the document.
“The general public, political parties and the media are strongly advised to disregard the contents of the said correspondence in its entirety, as it is fake,” Eta-Messi said.
She described the act as a serious electoral offence and a deliberate attempt to mislead Nigerians.
The electoral body is collaborating with security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible.
The forged letter appears linked to a submission by PDP officials Abdulrahman Muhammed and Senator Samuel Anyanwu on November 5, 2025, before their expulsion.
The officials had notified INEC of a postponement of the Ekiti congress and governorship primary, originally scheduled for November 8, citing logistical challenges.
INEC rejected the notice, citing non-compliance with the Electoral Act, which requires such communications to be jointly signed by the National Chairman and National Secretary.
As a note of warning, INEC stressed that circulation of false documents undermines electoral integrity and urged all stakeholders to verify information through official channels.
